Nichia’s Dynasolis™ LED technology marks the evolution in human-centric lighting, designed to align with and enhance human circadian rhythms. By combining energizing azure light with calming warm white hues, Dynasolis™ offers a unique approach to indoor lighting that addresses both visual and non-visual human needs. This advanced lighting solution is ideal for improving health, well-being, and productivity across a wide range of environments, from offices and homes to healthcare facilities and schools.

The Concept of Human Centric Lighting
Human Centric Lighting (HCL) is a design philosophy that prioritizes the impact of light on human physiology, psychology, and overall well-being. With the advent of tunable white LED technology, it has become possible to replicate the natural light cycle indoors, creating environments that promote comfort and efficiency. Typically, HCL systems use a combination of warm (2700K) and cool white (6500K) LEDs to mimic the changing color temperature of daylight, which can range from the warm hues of dawn to the bright, cool light of midday.

Morning light, rich in 480nm wavelengths, plays a crucial role in regulating the body’s internal clock by stimulating serotonin production—a hormone that enhances mood and energy levels. Higher serotonin levels in the morning lead to increased melatonin production in the evening, promoting better sleep and overall health.
Conventional tunable white systems often fall short in this regard, as they rely on cool white LEDs that lack sufficient 480nm spectrum, resulting in suboptimal serotonin stimulation and, consequently, lower physical and mental activation throughout the day. Dynasolis™ addresses this shortcoming by replacing the standard 6500K LEDs with azure LEDs, which are optimized to deliver the necessary 480nm light. This enhancement maximizes melanopic illuminance, boosting alertness in the morning and fostering relaxation followed by improved sleep in the evening, by gradually transitioning to warmer light tones.

With this innovative approach, Nichia’s Dynasolis™ represents a significant advancement in human-centric lighting, offering a unique solution that combines spectrum and color tuning to regulate circadian rhythms. By incorporating energizing azure light and calming warm white hues, Dynasolis™ enhances physical and mental well-being, making it an ideal choice for many applications, from offices and homes to healthcare facilities and schools. As more people become aware of the health benefits of proper lighting, Dynasolis™ stands out as a versatile and effective solution for creating optimal lighting environments.
Dual Spectrum Tuning: Dynasolis™ offers unparalleled flexibility by enabling both spectrum and color tuning. This feature allows for a seamless transition from an invigorating azure spectrum to a calming warm spectrum, effectively supporting circadian rhythm regulation and enhancing comfort in any indoor environment.

Melanopic Illuminance: Dynasolis™ prioritizes melanopic illuminance, which is essential for regulating circadian rhythms. By targeting the light-sensitive retinal ganglion cells, this technology stimulates serotonin production, helping to improve mood, increase alertness, and promote better sleep quality.

High CRI and Efficacy: Maintaining a high Color Rendering Index (CRI) alongside superior luminous efficacy, Dynasolis™ delivers high-quality lighting that not only supports circadian health but also ensures visual clarity and comfort, making it suitable for various applications.

To validate the benefits of Dynasolis™, Nichia commissioned the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics (IBP) to conduct a comprehensive study analyzing its cognitive and psychological effects.
The Fraunhofer IBP designed a series of comparative tests to evaluate the effects of Dynasolis™ lighting on human alertness, attention, and relaxation. Approximately 35 test subjects participated in each test series, where they were exposed to different lighting conditions, including standard LEDs (2700K, 4000K, and 6000K, each with CRI 83+) and the Dynasolis™ solution at color temperatures of 2700K, 6000K, and 10000K.

The tests included the Stroop Task for attention evaluation, the AuReTim method for measuring alertness, and the PANAS (Positive and Negative Affect Schedule) test for assessing stress levels and relaxation.

1. Enhanced Attention and Reaction Times
The Stroop Task revealed significant improvements in reaction times when subjects were under the Dynasolis™ 6000K lighting compared to standard 6000K LEDs without cyan light. The inclusion of cyan light in the Dynasolis™ solution resulted in shorter reaction times, indicating improved attention and cognitive performance. Furthermore, subjects responded even faster under Dynasolis™ 10000K, highlighting the positive impact of increased cyan light on attention.
2. Improved Alertness
The AuReTim alertness test demonstrated that color temperature significantly affects alertness levels. Subjects were more alert under higher color temperatures (6000K) compared to lower ones (4000K). This effect was consistent across both standard LEDs and Dynasolis™, but the Dynasolis™ solution provided an additional boost due to its optimized spectrum.
3. Effective Relaxation
To assess relaxation, subjects were first placed in a room lit by standard 4000K LEDs to acclimate. They were then subjected to a stress-inducing cognitive task, followed by a relaxation phase under different lighting conditions. The results indicated that subjects felt more relaxed under 2700K lighting, regardless of whether it was standard LED or Dynasolis™. The Dynasolis™ solution, however, provided equal relaxation benefits while maintaining the advantages of its spectrum tuning.
4. Comprehensive Benefits Across Applications
The study confirmed that Dynasolis™ could meet various human lighting needs more effectively than standard LEDs. Its ability to tune both color temperature and melanopic illuminance makes it a superior solution for applications ranging from workspaces and educational facilities to healthcare and hospitality environments.
The results from the Fraunhofer IBP study underscore the significant advantages of the Dynasolis™ lighting solution. By incorporating cyan light and optimizing the spectrum, Dynasolis™ enhances attention and alertness and supports relaxation and overall well-being. This dual capability makes Dynasolis™ a versatile and effective choice for human-centric lighting applications.
