LED strip lighting is an increasingly popular lighting technique that can dramatically transform the mood and ambiance of a dining room. Cove lighting, a specific indirect lighting technique, utilizes LED strips hidden within a cove in the wall or ceiling to create a seamless line of light that illuminates the surrounding surfaces. Let's present the benefits and techniques of using LED cove lights in your dining room lighting design, providing you with a comprehensive guide to enhance your space.
Benefits of LED Cove Lighting in the Dining Room
LED cove lights offer numerous benefits in the dining room, including:
-
Subtle and sophisticated lighting approach: Cove lighting provides a soft, indirect illumination that enhances the dining room atmosphere without being overpowering.
-
Highlighting architectural features: Cove lighting can accentuate architectural elements, such as crown molding or coffered ceilings, adding depth and visual interest to the space.
-
Warm and inviting atmosphere: The indirect nature of cove lighting creates a warm and welcoming ambiance, perfect for intimate dinners or gatherings with friends and family.
-
Versatile and energy-efficient lighting solution: LED cove lights consume less energy and have a longer lifespan compared to traditional lighting sources, resulting in lower energy costs and reduced environmental impact.
-
Flexibility in design, color, and dimming capabilities: LED cove lights can be installed in various locations and are available in a range of color temperatures and brightness levels, allowing for customizable lighting design tailored to your specific needs.
Techniques for Implementing LED Cove Lighting in the Dining Room
To effectively incorporate LED cove lights into your dining room, consider the following techniques:
- Determine the Purpose of the Illumination
First, think about the ambiance you want to create. What kind of mood are you looking for? What kind of lighting will complement your personal style and your home’s existing décor? It’s essential to have enough light to illuminate the table, walls, and artwork while avoiding glare. Keep in mind that dining rooms serve multiple functions, from entertaining guests to casual family meals.
Before selecting LED strips, determine the purpose of the illumination. Dining rooms require a relaxed atmosphere and flexibility in terms of lighting level and position. Therefore, we recommend using cove lighting with at least 1500 lm per meter for general lighting. Task lighting can be achieved with spotlights or linear LED lights, while ambient lighting or furniture lighting with glare prevention can be obtained from LED cove lights of up to 1500 lm per meter.
For linear lighting fixtures above the dining table, use LED strips with at least 1800 lm per meter.
- Create Balanced Lighting
One linear pendant is rarely enough to adequately light any room. To create layers of light, combine general and accent lighting. For example, use recessed and linear lighting to highlight architectural elements and artwork. This draws the eye to interesting moments in the room and prevents the space from feeling “flat.” If you don’t have any art to light, hang wall sconces in their place to add stylish indirect lighting to the space.
- Consider the Shape of the Table
While there are no hard and fast rules, the shape of your table does impact which light fixtures will look best above it. A linear suspension or linear multi-pendant light fixture is an excellent fit over a rectangular table, while a linear light fixture might not look the best over a round table. Whichever fixture you choose, ensure you add soft general lighting to provide a flattering, warm background and a more comfortable atmosphere.
- Select LED Strips with High Energy Efficiency
Opt for LED strips with high energy efficiency, at least 150 lumens per watt (lm/w), and position them inside the cove light so that most of the emitted light reaches the reflective surface, such as a wall or ceiling. Avoid wasting energy by illuminating the inside of the cove.
- Use LED Strips that are Easy to Install and have Low Redundancy of Parts
Choose light sources that can be easily spread out over long distances and require minimal auxiliary items, such as wires, connectors, screws, or transformers. A large capacity transformer is recommended for optimal performance.
- Choose LED Strips with High-Quality Light Spectrum and Color Rendering Index
For dining rooms, white 2700K lights are commonly used to create a cozy, intimate ambiance. However, tunable white LED strips are also a great option. These strips are equipped with LEDs in two different color temperatures (2200-2700K and 6500K), allowing you to create various moods and ambiance with ease. Adjust the light to your desired color temperature using a controller, giving you the ability to adapt the lighting to your needs. For architectural lighting or furniture lights, we recommend LED strips with a minimum CRI of 80. For general lighting or highlighting artistic works, opt for full-spectrum “daylight” light sources with a CRI of at least 90.
- Install High-Quality LED Strips
Long-lasting LED light sources with minimal color shift over time are recommended, especially for installations with considerable lengths. If the brightness of the light source fades too soon or the color temperature changes, the total replacement of the installation may be necessary for uniform lighting.
- Include a Dimming Option for General Lighting
In many situations, dimmer lighting is desired. Ensure that both the LED strips and the transformer are dimmable, allowing for light intensity control via an external dimmer. This can be a rotary or push button wall switch, a remote control, a smart building control signal, or an app on your phone or tablet.
Currently, wireless dimming control via Casambi or Philips Hue-compatible products is an excellent choice. Both these ecosystems have mature apps for control, robust privacy controls, and numerous online resources, such as how-to guides.
Recommended LED strips & accessories for dining room lighting
LED strip lighting in the dining room is an effective way to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. With the proper LED strip, cove lighting in your dining room can mimic the natural light from a hidden window, highlight architectural features, and create a soft and gentle glow. By considering factors such as the purpose of the illumination, energy efficiency, ease of installation, light quality, and lumen maintenance, you can transform your dining room into a beautiful and welcoming space that reflects your personal style and preferences.
Depending on the LED strip location and the type of lighting in the dining room, we have a complied a list of recommendations, including accessories and drivers. To purchase them, just add to the cart and change the desired quantity.
1. LED strips for cove lights
LED strips installed in the cove light with the purpose of General illumination via lines of light should have a light output up to 2400 lumens per meter (600 lm/foot), depending on the cove design and materials used.

2. LED strips for linear pendants
A hanging linear pendant can be installed above the table to enhance illumination over the dining area and transform it into the focal point of the room. Many linear pendants can be quite costly, even reaching thousands of euros, yet they may only contain an average-performing LED strip light inside. These lights may have a CRI of only 80, insufficient brightness, or a short lifespan. As the light source is not replaceable in most cases, such a fixture might not be a wise investment.
By employing a bit of DIY, you can use our linear profiles to create a high-performance linear pendant with an exceptional LED strip inside. Options include the LumiFlex3098+ LED strips with Sunlike CRI98+ or the highly energy-efficient LumiFlex3080 LED strips. You can even make the pendant tunable white using our LumiFlexTW, a feature that is typically more expensive in such lighting fixtures. Since all our strips are sold in 5-meter reels, any leftover length can be utilized for cove lights, indirect lighting, or incorporation into furniture elements.

3. LED strips for shelves or cabinet lighting
LED strips installed for shelves or cabinet lighting should have a slightly lower light output, up to 1000 lumens per meter (300 lm/foot), depending on the cove design and materials used.
