A micro-sized, high brightness powerful LED package is referred to as CSP (Chip Scale Package) LED.
CSP are smaller size LED while having similar high power.
A CSP LED is equal to an LED chip or can be a maximum of 20% larger and thus has a high light intensity. It also does not contain a wire connection like conventional SMD LEDs, a factor that makes it a more stable product, with better thermal performance than conventional LEDs.
As a result, the Direct Mountable Chip technology slashes at one major element of system cost: heat management. With thermal resistance of only 0.3 (℃/W junction to Ts measuring point), heat sinks can be smaller or higher performance can be obtained without increasing the heat sink.
Compared with 1-3 Watt LEDs from other manufactures the NVSWE21A (304lm@5000K and 2.1W) and the NCSWE17A (152lm@5000K and 1.05W) are considerably more effective at transferring the heat away from the LED chip.
In practical terms, for example, with a cooling element with a total thermal resistance of 15℃/W (Tc measurement point to ambient temperature) we can obtain a 30% increase in the luminous flux by using the NVSWE21A with 0.3℃/W thermal resistance compared to a LED with similar characteristics but with 5℃/W thermal resistance (Junction to Ts measuring point). Compared with a LED with 10℃/W we could see an 80% increase in performance, without any decrease in lifetime.
Further savings at the system cost can be obtained by product miniaturization which is possible by increasing the luminous flux from a square millimeter of LED package. This relationship between LED light and size is called flux density.
Direct Mountable Chip technology leads to an increase of flux density by up to 95% compared with the best alternative LED designs. From only 4.41 mm² (2.1 x 2.1 mm) the NVSWE21A has a typical flux of 304lm@5000K and 2.1W.
In combination with low thermal resistance, high flux density can reduce product dimensions and cost significantly. Up to 80% of the cost of a LED product does not result from the LED itself but from its case, cooling, driver and optics. For example, if a product has 15% less material cost this will have the same impact in the price if the industry slashing LED price by 75%. As a bonus, less material use is good for the environment.
CPS LEDs, also empowers luminaire designers to create designs never before possible because LEDs can be clustered very closely together with conventional SMT and reflow production processes. Due to the seemingly borderless design a LED package of custom size can be "created" from clustering Direct Mountable Chip Nichia LEDs.
Currently, the Direct Mountable Chip is used in the following Nichia LEDs
