CRI Requirements for Specialty Lighting: Why Nichia Optisolis and H6 Series Are the Best Choice

What Is CRI and Why Is It Important in Specialty Lighting?

When it comes to specialty lighting—from museums and galleries to medical spaces and premium retail—the quality of light is critical. A key factor in achieving visually accurate and functional lighting is the Color Rendering Index (CRI).

In this article, we explore what CRI means, why it matters, and how Nichia’s Optisolis™ and H6 Series LEDs, combined with our custom LED modules, offer the ultimate lighting solution.

What Is CRI and Why Is It Important in Specialty Lighting?

CRI (Color Rendering Index) is a scale from 0 to 100 that measures how accurately a light source reveals colors compared to natural daylight. While general lighting applications may only require a CRI of 80, specialty lighting environments demand CRI values of 90 or higher.

Applications that rely on color-critical decisions—such as art preservation, medical diagnostics, or high-end product displays—also require strong performance in individual color metrics like:

R9 (deep red rendering)

R12 (blue saturation rendering)

A high overall CRI isn’t enough if R9 and R12 values are lacking. These indices are essential for realistic skin tones, accurate reds, and detailed textures—especially in museum lighting, medical lighting, and retail displays.

Why Standard LEDs Fall Short in CRI Performance

Most standard LEDs are designed for energy efficiency, not color fidelity. Even if they meet general CRI standards, they often underperform in R9 and R12, and may emit excess blue light or UV, which can be harmful to artworks and sensitive materials.

In short: general-purpose LEDs are not suitable for specialty lighting.

Nichia high CRI LEDs

For example, the standard JIS Z 9112:2019 classifies the minimum CRI as shown below.

Minimum CRI Values for LEDs

The CRI required for each class are specified as follows: standard type is mainly for outdoor use; Class 1 CRI LED (Ra80) is for offices and residences; Class 2 CRI LED (Ra9085) is for stores, inspection, and medical use, as well as in offices and residences, especially in situations where communication is important; Class 3 CRI LED (Ra95) is for museums and art galleries; Class 4 CRI LED (Ra9585) is for color inspection, painting, dyeing, and printing. As introduced, CRI values required for each class are specified and ideal applications are described.
